Overdoing Multivitamins? Is That Even Possible?

Overdoing Vitamins

Almost everywhere - from Facebook to the pretty pages of your favorite magazine to the packaging of your go-to foods - you’ll read that getting your vitamins and minerals from fruits and veggies is an important aspect of living a Nutritious Life1. And, that’s spot on!

However, we don’t live in a perfect world, so while it would be ideal to get all of the things we need from our diet, this often is easier said than done.

Supplementing your healthy diet that’s packed with fruit and veggies (and whole grains, healthy fats and lean protein!) is often necessary. However, there is such thing as too much of a good thing.

Unlike water soluble vitamins that dissolve in water and are excreted by the body if taken in excess, fat soluble vitamins go through your digestive tract, into the lymph system, and then into the blood to be stored in fat and liver cells. Since theses vitamins can’t be excreted, over accumulation of them can lead to toxicity and negative health side effects. What’s a healthy wannabe to do?

Can you overdo vitamins

Vitamins A, D, and E are all considered fat soluble (K is too!), and should be supplemented with caution.

Hypervitaminosis of vitamin A can cause bone pain, changes in vision, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, jaundice, and itchy or peeling skin2. If it becomes a prolonged chronic problem, accumulation of vitamin A can even lead to liver damage.

Overconsumption of vitamin D has even been shown to cause hypercalcemia3 (too much calcium in the blood), which can weaken the integrity of your bones and cause complications in both your brain and heart.

In one study, intake of vitamin E over 400 IU per day was associated with increased overall risk of death4, and high doses through multivitamins have been known to cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, blurred vision, or rashes5

Fortunately, there's a simple solution. Life’s Abundance Multivitamin provides these critical vitamins and minerals, but was developed and formulated to ensure that the nourishing ingredients are in amounts you need to simply SUPP-lement the diet, not overdo it.

Unlike some competing brands that overload their supplements, Life’s Abundance knows that more is not always more! You don’t want to bombard your body with an endless list (and amount) of vitamins and minerals that will only be excreted out, or end up causing you more harm than good.

An extra bonus? Our proprietary spice blend and black pepper fruit extract in this multi will supply you with an additional boost of nutrition!

The Surprising Benefits Of Plant Proteins

The Benefits of Plant Protein

It's not an exaggeration to say that more people are worrying about their health (especially, their healthcare) than ever before. Some could argue that all of this increased worry is actually having a negative impact on the health of Americans! While the latest effort by Congress to change our nation's healthcare system appears to have stalled, it doesn't mean we shouldn't be taking active measures to protect our own health. So, let's try to put aside the worry - and the politics - and focus on some really exciting science!

Thanks to a long-term study supported by multiple grants from the National Institutes for Health, we could all start doing something today that could have a real, measurable impact on our long-term health. Is it a miracle drug? No! Is it the latest fitness gadget or exercise program? No! In fact, it's simply a minor change in what we eat. That’s it! To understand why the medical profession is abuzz with the radical implications of the latest news, we need to come to terms with one simple, undeniable fact. As Americans, we're eating way too much meat. So much, in fact, that it's making us sick.

Researchers at Harvard's Massachusetts General Hospital recently announced findings of a groundbreaking study, one of the largest of its kind. Nutritional scientists examined the effects of regular consumption of high levels of protein from animal sources compared to vegetarian sources. Much of the animal protein came from processed red meats. And the results were nothing short of astonishing! They indicated that heavy meat eaters had a higher mortality rate. Participants in the study whose diets had a higher percentage of plant-sourced proteins experienced a lower risk of death.

Plant Protein

The researchers analyzed two massive sets of data, one encompassing more than 30 years worth of information from NHS participants, and another that captured 26 years worth for HPFS participants. The combined total amount of reviewed data was a whopping 3.5 million person-years. Over the course of the data collection, more than 36,000 participant deaths were recorded. Those who perished fell into three major groups: 9,000 from cardiovascular disease, 13,000 from cancer and about 14,000 from other causes. When adjustments were made for competing risk factors, researchers found that eating protein primarily from animal sources (meat, eggs or dairy) was associated with an increased rate of death. The same adjustments were made for those whose consumption of protein came primarily from plant sources (breads, cereals, beans, legumes, etc.), and the results were highly significant … they uniformly had a lower mortality rate!

The data was unambiguous and clearly supports what vegetarians have been talking about for decades. The full report will appear in the August 1st edition of the Journal of American Medical Association – Internal Medicine (citation provided below).

Fortunately for Life’s Abundance customers, we offer the perfect solution to this widespread dietary problem. It’s never been easier, more convenient or more delicious to boost your plant protein content thanks to our innovative supplement powders, now available in both Chocolate and Vanilla!

4 Ways To Make Your Gut Health Happy!

4 Ways To Keep Your Gut Healthy

Gut health has been building steam as a trending health topic as more and more research points to the importance of the microbiome. Micro - what? Microbiome is a fancy word for the trillions (yes, trillions!) of microbes that live in your gut, on your skin and elsewhere.

Your gut health affects everything from your immune system, to your weight, to your brain function, so it’s really important to focus on what’s going on in your belly. Or shall I say what’s going INTO your belly.

It may sound crazy to think that your digestion controls all of the above mentioned, but actually, scientists have discovered that the microbes in your gut are engaged in a constant conversation with your mind. And that chatter could be affecting your emotions, moods and behavior in major ways.

It turns out that your gut’s got its very own nervous system, called the Enteric Nervous System (ENS). It’s so influential on your body that it’s often referred to as “the second brain.” The main job of the ENS is to regulate digestion, but it also sends up regular signals to the brain via the vagus nerve.

Think of the vagus nerve as a busy two-lane highway. Traffic is moving in both directions, but it’s much heavier headed north, to the brain. Who’s directing that flow of traffic? Your microbes, of course.

Studies have shown that changing the makeup of gut microbiota actually changed how mice behaved, affecting anxiety and cognition, for instance*. Mice raised without beneficial microbes also have been shown to be less capable of managing stress**.

Another example: 90% of the mood-balancing neurotransmitter serotonin is made in the gut, and research has shown that microbes play a critical role in its production***. So, if yours are not doing their job well, your body could end up with inadequate serotonin. That’s a problem since serotonin regulates sleep, appetite, mood, and more.

Here are four ways to take steps in the right direction towards regulating a healthy microbiome.

1. Add fermented foods to your diet. These are foods like kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi. These foods begin with a live active culture and are fermented, giving them the benefit of probiotics.

2. Eat fiber. Many fibers are considered to be prebiotics. This means that they feed the good bacteria already present in your gut. But different fibers feed different bacterium, so it’s important to get these prebiotics from multiple sources and from a variety of foods.

3. Drink lots of fluids. Our bodies need water for skin health, immunity and energy, but also to push things along through digestion. So while we need the bacteria for gut health, we also need the fluids to keep everything moving as it should.

4. Take a probiotic daily. You can think of adding this supplement as a bit of an ‘insurance policy’ to make sure that you’re balancing the bacteria in your gut every day, no matter what. I wholeheartedly recommend Probiotic Supplement, which has a proprietary 5-strain blend with 25 billion CFUs guaranteed. Plus, it's made in the USA!

Gluten Free! Vegan! Non-GMO! Dairy Free! Soy Free! Tastes Fabulous! What Is This Product?

You had me at Gluten Free but then said Vegan, Non-GMO, Dairy Free, Soy Free AND Tastes Great?!? Ok, this Plant Protein Powder is da Bomb! Seriously guys, you are going to love this. We use the Vanilla Plant Protein Powder every morning in our smoothie. It's smooooth and silky. I remember our old protein powder was chalky and never mixed well by spoon. In the morning we use our blender since we are adding frozen fruit to our smoothie. However, post workout, we would just add our protein powder to a glass of water or almond milk and it would never mix up. This Plant Protein Powder does! Another big win!

In the afternoon, we like a snack. I'm sure most of you do and it's very easy to grab a chocolate bar or some chips. If you're craving chocolate, you have to try the Chocolate Plant Protein Powder! You can just add it to the milk of your choice and that is a much healthier option than grabbing a chocolate bar and just as easy. If you have a little more time, you can make the Banana Split Smoothie that I talk about in this video. It has stopped me from wanting to drive to the local ice cream shop for a banana split. Another big win!

Multivitamins… Are They A Good Or Bad Idea

In an ideal world, we would eat the perfect amounts and proportions of just the right foods from pristine, organically grown farms so we could obtain optimal nutrition from each and every bite. Sounds good, right?

It’s important to understand that foods are complicated – in a good way. All foods contain a host of complex micronutrients that work together in perfect harmony. This is why I believe that you can’t pop a pill and expect it to replace all of the nutrition foods deliver in your diet. There’s no singular pill, powder or solution that can compare with the comprehensive nutrition that fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and other foods supply to the diet.

The problem is that this is the real world, not an ideal world and our food supply, lifestyles and unique nutritional needs make it difficult for us to get the all nutrients we need from food alone. Fruits and vegetables don’t contain the vitamins and minerals they used to years ago due to the depletion of these nutrients in the soil. They also lose nutritional potency in transit from the farm to your table, not to mention the nutrients lost when cooking them. And finally, our hectic schedules often get in the way of making the right dietary choices. For example, instead of a grilled chicken breast with a sweet potato and green beans for dinner, you worked late and picked up a bucket of fried chicken with mashed potatoes and an apple cobbler dessert. This is why only one out of five people get adequate vitamins and minerals from their food.

Here’s where I believe a daily supplements can be very helpful. Although they cannot replace all of the nutrition food delivers, when your body needs a little extra help, they will have your back and can go a long way to help nutritionally compensate those of us who live in the real world.

So now you may be wondering, “what should I be taking?” There’s so many options to choose from that it can get kind of overwhelming. Is a gender-specific formula the way to go, should I try compressed pills, capsules or a gummies, perhaps a mega-dose formula is right for me or should opt for a special supplement formulated for hair and nails, energy or my age? I believe a multivitamin that provides you with the essential nutrients for optimal health and no more makes the most sense. Because too much of “good thing” can have unwanted consequences.

I recommend Life’s Abundance Multivitamin because it provides a balanced approach to a daily supplement, providing all of the essential nutrients and none of the extras. Plus, we’ve added a unique spice blend of black pepper extract, rosemary, turmeric, oregano, cayenne, cinnamon, holy basil and cloves. These spices offer a wealth of plant-based phytonutrients and antioxidants so important for optimal health. And since I believe it’s important to reduce additives from the diet, it is free from magnesium stearate. Life’s Abundance Multivitamin veggie capsules are made from cellulose, which not only helps protect sensitive ingredients but also breaks down and delivers nutrients more easily than compressed tablets. And, last but not least, it is soy, grain and dairy free with no added sugar, artificial flavors, color or preservatives. So, do the best you can to eat as healthy as you can and if you need a little help, try Life’s Abundance Multivitamin.

What Are Antioxidants And Free Radicals, Where Are They Found And What Do They Do For You?

Antioxidants. Free radicals. Two buzzwords thrown around as often as, we eat! But what are antioxidants and free radicals exactly, where are they found and what do they do to and for you?

Antioxidants are compounds that protect your cells against the effects of free radicals. Think of them as the "good guys" that protect you from the "bad guys", free radicals.

Free radicals are produced when your body breaks down certain foods, from environmental exposures such as tobacco smoke and even from the sun. In science terms, a free radical is a highly reactive unpaired oxygen atom. While oxygen is good and essential for the body, it is meant to be perfectly paired in its balanced O2 form. Think of a free radical as a pinball careening around inside your body, constantly smashing into other cells, and inhibiting normal cell function—the cells can’t do their jobs properly because this little guy keeps storming the gates. They damage cells and contribute to aging and other health concerns.

The good news is that we don’t need to live in fear of free radicals. Our bodies are pretty amazing and we can fight them, even with the food we eat. Free radicals can be reduced by eating foods that are loaded with antioxidants. Now the whole “good guy” part is making sense, right?

Antioxidants help counter free radicals in your body (think squashing that fly with a swatter) in a variety of ways. For example, antioxidants lessen the deterioration of the skin’s vital components like collagen and elastin. They protect against long-term sun damage, like wrinkling and skin discoloration, and from UVB exposure by fighting the free radicals that result from sun and pollution.

My favorite foods which have been found to deliver some of the highest antioxidant power are foods such as blueberries, artichokes, black beans, lentils and dark leafy greens. But all fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and legumes will provide antioxidants. Herbs and spices and tea and coffee are also a powerful place to up your intake.

It’s important to remember to mix it up when it comes to eating. So, no eating that same turkey sandwich every day. Eating a variety of whole foods will ensure that you consume a wide range of antioxidants providing your body with the most help it can get, and you’ll be more satisfied, too! Even when you’re eating a balanced diet, sometimes it’s near impossible to consume all of the vitamins and minerals you need. Supplementing your diet with a low calorie antioxidant blend can be as easy as adding it to a glass of water. With our Minerals & Antioxidants mixes, just pour, stir and immediately enjoy 11 different nutrient-dense super foods, while simultaneously contributing to your 8 recommended glasses of water a day!

What Makes Life's Abundance Minerals & Antioxidants Drink Mix So Special?

We eat as healthy as possible but also know that due to many factors in the world, our food is not as nutritious as it was year's ago. I'd love to have a garden but my thumbs aren't too green so we reply on local farmer's markets and healthy drinks like Life's Abundance Minerals & Antioxidants drink. You can read more about it here and there are 2 awesome flavors to choose from - cherry and tropical fruit. While I am a little more partial to tropical fruit, the cherry is just as delicious so why not go ahead and order both like we do! You can change them up during the day and have variety because variety is the spice of life!

What is ORAC and why is it important?

ORAC stands for oxygen radical absorbance capacity and it is a way of measuring antioxidant capacities.

Why should I choose foods that are non-GMO?

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organisms. Genetic modification is a technique that alters living cells to produce new chemicals and functions in plants and animals. Many food scientists question the safety of genetically modified foods because they do not know if eating GMO foods over a lifetime can damage our health.

What is vegan?

A vegan is a person who does not eat or use animal products.

What does gluten free mean and why is it important?

Gluten is a protein found in certain grains including wheat, barley and rye. Gluten is the sticky protein that gives bread dough its elastic quality.

To people with celiac disease, a gluten-free diet is very important because it is the only known treatment for celiac disease, an autoimmune digestive disease. People with celiac cannot digest gluten, which causes inflammation in the digestive system and affects the small intestine's ability to absorb nutrients from food. Symptoms of celiac disease include diarrhea, bloating, fatigue, and anemia.

People with gluten sensitivity have similar symptoms to those with celiac disease but test negative for it as well as wheat allergies. These people may feel fatigued, depressed, bloated and have abdominal pain.

Gluten-free grains include rice, corn, quinoa and buckwheat.

I have noticed “soy free” foods lately and I want to know if soy products are unhealthy?

Soy is one of the top food allergies, especially among babies and children. Symptoms of soy allergy are typically mild, although anaphylaxis is possible. People avoiding GMOs may avoid soy since more than 90% of soybeans grown in the U.S. are genetically modified.

Soy can disrupt thyroid function which may lead to hypothyroidism and thyroid problems.

Soy contains phytoestrogens, compounds that mimic human estrogen.

Is eating dairy free healthy?

People may go dairy free if they are lactose-intolerant, have a milk allergy or are vegan.

People with lactose intolerance do not have the enzyme lactase which helps to digest milk and they can experience diarrhea, nausea, bloating and cramps when eating dairy products.

Milk allergies, which are one of the top 8 food allergies, occur either minutes or hours after having milk or milk products and can cause hives, wheezing, vomiting, diarrhea and cramps.

People may also avoid dairy for ethical reasons or believe it helps keep their skin clear.

Sugar is a natural ingredient so why do I care if there’s no sugar added?

Eating too much sugar has been linked to inflammation throughout the body and increased health risks. It is important to check labels since manufacturers frequently add sugar to many products that you would not think of as sweet, such as pasta sauces, chicken nuggets, cured meats, and ketchup. Also, sugar comes in many forms such as cane syrup, high fructose corn syrup and crystalline fructose.

What is Stevia?

Leaves of the stevia plant are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar, so very little is needed to sweeten foods and/or beverages.

What is monk fruit extract?

This fruit grown in Southeast Asia is one to one-and-one-half times sweeter than sugar so very little is needed to sweeten foods and/or beverages.

Are natural flavors healthier than artificial flavors?

In general, artificial flavors tend to be in foods that are overly processed. If a food product contains artificial flavors, check to make sure that it doesn't also contain other less desirable additives like artificial colors and preservatives.

What’s wrong with artificial colors?

Artificial colors may cause hyperactivity and behavioral changes in children.

What’s wrong with artificial preservatives?

Some artificial preservatives have been linked to increased risks for illnesses.

What are the manufacturer’s credentials?

This dietary supplement is manufactured by a company that is GMP certified and FDA regulated in the USA.

Tired Of Sugary Health And Sports Drinks?

Americans are deficient in minerals. In fact, way back in 1936, the Department of Agriculture told congress that 99% of the population was deficient. Regrettably, there are many more recent studies confirming varying amounts of mineral deficiencies in our diet, mainly due to their depletion in our soil.

We need minerals! Vitamins cannot work properly without them and they are absolutely vital to maintain our mental and physical well being. Since the body cannot manufacture minerals, they must come from our diet.

Life’s Abundance Minerals & Antioxidants drink mix is a delicious way to supplement your diet.

Tired Of Being Tired? Tips For Starting Your Day Off Right

Meditating start your day off right

Do you ever wish you were living back in the days before our mornings started off with phone alerts and emails waiting to be answered? Yes, it’s annoying to have modern day technology interrupt what could be a pleasant start to your day, but the good news is that you have the power to create a morning ritual that is energizing and inspiring.

Rather than opening up your phone to check social media or your computer to get ahead at work, start your day off right with the following tips to guarantee a positive beginning to your day.

Practice Gratitude

My favorite daily practice that starts the day out right is being grateful. Find three things to be thankful for each and every morning before your feet hit the ground and at night before you lay your head down.

It could be for a great day at work or for your wonderful partner beside you. It could be the volunteer job you love, the yoga mat waiting for you, or the five-mile run you’re going to brave the cold for.

Choose to start your day from a place of abundance, because research shows that those who do are more optimistic, have more social connections, sleep more soundly, exercise more and are happier. They’re also less likely to be depressed, envious and greedy.

Practicing gratitude is a no-brainer!

Quit Skipping Breakfast

You may think skipping breakfast will save you time and calories later in the day, but unfortunately it does just the opposite. Studies show that eating breakfast actually reduces hunger later in the day, and gives you more energy and brain power to get through your to-do list.

Need more proof? Eating a nutritious breakfast can:

• Help you lose weight, and decrease your risk of obesity.

• Increase brain function and concentration.

• Increase metabolism by as much as 10 percent.

• Decrease stress.

• Help you stick to your diet, and prevent snacking throughout the day.

Most people claim they don’t have time to eat breakfast. So if that’s your favorite excuse, I have great news - there are plenty of quick and easy breakfast ideas to get you started on the right track - even if your only breakfast encounter has been at the drive thru.

It takes more time to wait in line at your favorite breakfast stop than it does to make my favorite protein-filled shake. Even if you need to drink it on the go, it’s the best kind of morning take-out there is.

Move it

Most of us are slaves to our computers and sit for hours on end each day, which studies show can lead not only to obesity, but also depression, neck and back problems, and even a shorter life span. What?!

The good news? Researchers at the University of Bristol(1) found that employees performed significantly better in areas of productivity, energy and focus on days that they exercised. If you’re a morning person, try to work out before you get to the office so a late day meeting doesn’t force you to ditch your evening spin class.

On days when I debate with myself whether to exercise when I’d rather not, I ask myself this:

“One hour from now do I want to feel SWEATY or SORRY?”

I can honestly say that nine times out of ten it works. (I’m human; I sometimes cave.) But, when I close my eyes and ponder this question, I know that I’m never sorry for putting on my sneakers, and always sorry when I don’t; and that’s all the motivation I need to get myself moving.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Restful sleep tonight sets the stage for increased energy and productivity tomorrow. Studies have shown that decreased sleep time leads to a drop in physical and mental energy. So, go for a full eight hours if you want to nail that presentation or stay awake for your kid’s afternoon soccer match.

Your kids probably have a peaceful nighttime routine, and so should you.

• Make your bedroom sleep-friendly by eliminating noise with a sound machine or earplugs, and turn off anything that emits light.

• Keep your room cool. The temperature of your bedroom can interfere with getting quality sleep.

• This may seem obvious, but make sure your bed is comfortable.

• Take a warm bath.

• Wind down with your favorite book.

• Prepare yourself for your next day; running through your schedule, getting the kids bags packed, and anything else that would make you late in the AM.

• Incorporate relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation before you fall off to sleep. This helps to relax the nervous system and prep for ZZZZs.

If you’ve been feeling “off” and can’t figure out why, vow to implement a few of these tips into your daily routine and I promise you’ll find more focus, energy and happiness in each day!

Not A Fan Of Veggies? Drink Your Greens Instead! This Seriously Tastes Delicious And Not Greeny Tasting.

Girl Drinking Greens Blend

Many people assume a green juice is for other people. They claim they don’t like veggies. They fear the poison-colored concoction will taste even worse than it looks. They think die-hard green juicers seem nutritionally elitist and willing to compromise their taste buds in the name of super fuel.

While there is definitely a spectrum of green -- from beginner to advanced -- there is a place for you somewhere along the line. I promise. And I’m encouraging you to join the party, because nothing bad happens when people add more whole green foods to their diet. Nothing. Zilch.

There are a few ways to go about getting more greens into your diet, and I promise they’re way easier than you think. Best part? You don’t even need a fork. You only need a straw.

Here are three ways to drink your greens

1) Hop on the green juice train. If you want to make your own juice, you’ll need a juicer but not necessarily the fanciest one on the market. Juicing is a process that extracts the liquid from whatever you put in it, and it leaves all the pulp out of your cup. The pulp is full of beneficial fiber, but if pulp isn’t your thing, you still get plenty of vitamins and minerals from drinking just the juice. Not into cooked broccoli, kale, collards or spinach? You may like them better in a raw juice. Sometimes the flavors are milder when raw and combined with other ingredients.

Immediately after the juice is made, it starts losing its nutritional powers, so you’ll want to grab a straw STAT. Green juice is sensitive to time (how long from when it was made until it is consumed), temperature (heat can diminish some of the vitamin potency) and storage (air and clear glass containers can also make the juice less potent). But even not-so-fresh juice is better than no juice at all, so don’t let this deter you. Just make sure to put in the fridge and drink within 24 hours if you’re not drinking as soon as you make it. Here’s a great beginner recipe if you’re just getting your feet wet:

Keri’s Beginner Greens Juice

● ½ head of romaine lettuce
● ½ cucumber
● ½ cup spinach leaves
● 1 green apple

Clean all produce well. Toss in the juicer in order and drink immediately.

2) Get your smoothie on. If you don’t have any more room on your kitchen counter for yet another appliance, then your handy blender is waiting for you to let it make a smoothie. A blender can’t separate the pulp from the juice, which is why by definition smoothies are thicker and well, smoother. The smoothie crowd is just as cool as the green juice crowd, and some would even argue smoothies are even healthier than juices because of that pulp stuff I mentioned.

My formula for the perfect smoothie is incredibly simple … 1 cup milk (cow’s, nut or seed-based milk), 1 fruit, a handful of greens, 1 healthy fat, an extra (call it a flavor wild-card) and protein powder.

One of my fave healthy fats is coconut because it’s loaded with health-promoting properties, flavor and, of course, healthy fats. The fat in coconut is mostly MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) and although they are a type of saturated fat, they are not the same saturated fat as you’ll get from say fatty meat.

3) Add a green supplement to your drink. Think green juices and smoothies too much work for you? I’ve got you covered. At Life’s Abundance, we’ve created a Greens Blend that is jam-packed to the brim with nutrients. All you have to do is mix with water. Yep, it’s that easy. Add a scoop to water and mix. The Greens Blend is made of organic greens (picked at peak nutrient density) and an organic mushroom blend for overall health. The best part? It doesn’t have that I-just-ate-dirt-from-the-yard taste. It has a yummy, berry flavor. You can add to water, your morning smoothie, baked goods like zucchini muffins or even to yogurt. Most important, just drink up. Greens are the master of the health universe.

How To Survive Holiday Stress

Stressed Woman

For many people, the holidays are a stressful time of year. Unexpected guests  dropping by, entertaining relatives, and finding the perfect gift on everyone’s  list are all daunting tasks. To add even more to the holiday pressure, we must  still deal with our day-to-day tasks and responsibilities. Talk about unwanted  stress!

Stress is the body’s normal form of defense. When faced with danger or  discomfort, your body reacts in a ‘fight or flight’ mode as a form of  protection. If your body is subjected to constant, repetitive and stressful  situations, without time to restore itself, your health could suffer.

In a recent study, found:

  • *43% of all adults suffer adverse health effects from stress

  • *75% to 90% of all doctor's office visits are stress-related ailments and  complaints

  • *Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) declares stress a hazard  of the workplace

  • *Stress costs the American industry more than $300 billion annually

In order to avoid the potentially harmful effects stress can place on your  body, there are some simple steps that you can take to help manage your stress  levels:

  • *Stay Positive – Is the glass half empty or half full? Always  try to see the positive side of things. Jot down all of the positive things  happening in your life. Focus your attention on them.

  • *Exercise – Just ten minutes on an elliptical machine or a brisk walk around  the block will be sure to boost your feel-good endorphins.

  • *Stretch – Stand tall and stretch those arms in the air. Take a few deep breaths  and release the tension from your body.

  • *Acceptance – Remember that some things are simply out of your control. You are  only responsible for what is under your direction.

  • *Breathe – Take a deep breath in through your nose and exhale through your  mouth. When you breathe in, feel your lungs fill with oxygen as your chest  expands. A few deep slow breaths will help send you to a state of calm.

  • *Walk – Remove yourself from the situation, get outside and take a ten-minute  walk. Clear your mind and take in the natural beauty of your surroundings.

  • *Supplement – Studies show that people who eat a diet rich in omega-3’s have an  easier time dealing with stressful situations. The fatty acids (EPA and DHA)  found in omega-3’s have proven to help the body maintain healthy levels of  serotonin. Serotonin helps control emotional responses and create a sense of  well-being. By supplementing your diet with an ultra-refined, ultra-concentrated fish oil like Sealogix, you can take a positive step in coping with stress in a healthier way.

The holidays should be a joyful time of the year to spend with family and  friends. Enjoy every day to its fullest, by simply helping the stress to leave  your body as quickly as it entered.

Echinacea-Goldenseal – Enjoy A Healthier Winter!

For superb immune support and protection this winter, try Echinacea-Goldenseal formula - great for the whole family!

Along with its two namesake herbs, Echinacea-Goldenseal formula contains Red Root, Myrrh, Licorice, Oregon Grape, Wild Indigo, and Yerba Mansa root for complete and comprehensive immune support.

Goldenseal root is known as “King of the Mucous Membranes” because of its effectiveness in combating infections involving the respiratory and digestive tracts. It contains the powerful natural antibiotics berberine and hydrastine, two extremely bitter alkaloids which have a notable antibacterial action.

Echinacea is a familiar remedy for many. It’s been used by indigenous Native Americans for hundreds of years for all kinds of maladies including infections, toothaches, and snake bites (this is where one of its many common names, Snake Root, comes from. Other herbs also share this common name, which is why it’s important to confirm the botanical name of the plant.).

Echinacea root and flower contain immune-boosting compounds that give it its familiar ‘tingle’ factor when the tincture is taken, and which instantly increase our salivation. These have been shown to support the production of a group of white blood cells (T cells) that are especially important for defending against viruses. In recent years, a growing body of scientific evidence has validated many of Echinacea’s traditional usages, especially its effectiveness against infections.

For more information or to order Echinacea-Goldenseal formula - and enjoy a healthier winter!

‘Tis the Season for Tasty Treats… and Herbs for Your Liver!

If you’re like many of us, you may find yourself nibbling on the shortbread a wee bit much, or sipping a little too much eggnog over the holidays… These goodies sure taste great, but all that extra sugar, fat, and alcohol can put an even bigger load than usual upon our hardworking liver. What can you do to give your liver a holiday, too?

Herbs such as Milk Thistle, Licorice, Turmeric, Dandelion and Burdock are excellent choices for helping the liver in its major role of detoxification. They support the liver by strengthening production of enzymes that help us metabolize toxins and drugs (including alcohol). They also assist the liver with its other important functions including: protein synthesis; manufacturing bile for elimination of fat-soluble toxins; and synthesis of cholesterol for production of important steroidal hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, cortisol and others.

It’s the perfect time of the year to show your liver a little extra love!

How do you take care of your health during this time of year, when we often overindulge?

STOP The Constant Painful Ringing & Buzzing In Your Ears!

Tinnitus Relief

Tinnitus is experienced by nearly everyone at one time or another, but is a persistent problem for nearly 40 million adults. It can drive a person crazy! Tinnitus may result in inability to concentrate, sleep or work. In addition, it may also be accompanied by other physical symptoms such as fullness in the ear, dizziness, nausea and headache. Ear Perfect homeopathic remedy may be the answer for you!

You may have seen doctors who tell you that there is no treatment for tinnitus and instead gave you medication for anxiety, depression or even muscle relaxants. Some may have even tested your ears and said there is no physical problem. They may have told you that it is all in your head and you should just get over it. More polite “experts” may have suggested that you can train your brain to ignore it. Others could suggested that you get a white noise machine or turn on a loud fan. Perhaps you have tried all of these methods and nothing has worked.

If you are one of the millions of adults still suffering from tinnitus, take heart. Unlike traditional medications which may be prescribed to help you relax, Ear Perfect is a natural homeopathic remedy which has virtually no side effects. Ear Perfect is a natural, homeopathic supplement system which has given relief to many chronic tinnitus sufferers. The ingredients contained in Ear Perfect drops and homeopathic pills have been used widely in Europe to treat and relieve tinnitus and the corresponding symptoms of anxiety, headache, insomnia, vertigo and fullness of the ear.

Here are some population facts about tinnitus to show that you are not alone:

•     Tinnitus affects about 17 percent of the general population around the world.
•     According to the American Tinnitus Association, more than 50 million people in the United States suffer from some degree of tinnitus.
•     Approximately 12 million Americans with tinnitus seek medical attention due to the frequency or severity of their symptoms.
•     Nearly two million of these people experience symptoms to the point that they are unable to function adequately at home or work.

Tinnitus Relief Remedy: Ear Perfect

The advantage of the Ear Perfect system is the unique combination of scientifically chosen homeopathic remedies which treats the symptoms of tinnitus from both the inside and the outside.  Ear Perfect also does not contain sedating medications or irritating herbal products as it is based on the system of homeopathic medicine which seeks to affect vital processes that have gone awry within the body.  As tinnitus has many causes, treating both the internal and external processes is the best way to achieve results and unlike most products, Ear Perfect does both.

How Natural Is Your Diet? It May Be Linked to Chronic Pain

Does your kitchen contain more processed foods like sugar-laden sweets and salty chips than fresh, natural fruits, veggies, and whole grains? According to a New York Times report, Americans purchase 787 pounds of processed food versus 602 pounds of fresh food annually.

If you suffer from chronic pain, a poor diet may be partially to blame. New studies show worsened symptoms for certain conditions, including fibromyalgia, migraines, and arthritis, for participants who consumed a high amount of artificial flavorings, sweeteners, and other food additives.

In addition, processed foods offer much less nutritional value, increasing the glycemic index of carbohydrates. This in turn leads to higher spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels.

Cut out the additives

The following list includes a few common additives you should try and avoid or limit consumption of:

  • Artificial Sweeteners: Aspartame and other sugar substitutes, which are a common ingredient in diet soda, has been linked to fibromyalgia and migraines.
  • High-Fructose Corn Syrup: Studies have shown that some people have intolerance for this sweetener, often used in packaged foods, which can cause chronic abdominal pain and other digestive disorders.
  • MSG. This flavor-enhancer has been linked to chronic pain, as glutamate (a component of MSG), can destroy nerve endings when excessively consumed, according to Barbara Mendez, MS, RPh, a pharmacist and nutritional consultant in New York. Be cautious when reading labels, as this ingredient can also be named glutamic acid, yeast extract, hydrolyzed protein, sodium caseinate, and autolyzed yeast.
  • Preservatives. While chemicals keep food from spoiling, they can also cause harm to health. Baked goods are particularly high in preservatives, so try to opt for fresher alternatives, like swapping lettuce for bread slices, or baking your own.

How to Manage Gout

Gout is a type of arthritis that results from the deposit and buildup of glass-like crystals of uric acid in your joints. Uric acid is a by-product of the breakdown of certain proteins. Normally, uric acid is broken down in the bloodstream and then eliminated in the urine.

It is estimated that over 2 million Americans have gout. A severe gout attack is extremely painful and, if left untreated, can cause permanent and severe joint damage. Fortunately, gout can be managed or controlled.

First things first: risk factors
Are you at risk for gout? Although gout can occur in men and women of any age, it most often occurs in men over age 40. Gout usually does not affect women until after menopause. Lifestyle factors increase the risk of gout, including being overweight, fasting or crash dieting, drinking alcohol in excess and eating a diet that includes foods high in purines (proteins which make up uric acid):
Organ meats (e.g., liver, kidney, brain, sweetbread, heart)
Fish roe
Legumes (e.g., dried beans, peas, soybeans)
Meat extracts

Drinking high-fructose beverages, like sugar-sweetened sodas and orange juice can dramatically increase your risk of gout. There appears to be a genetic component as well, but not a large one. Six percent to 18% of people who have gout have relatives who also have gout. (In a small number of people, the risk of gout is increased by an enzyme defect that interferes with the way the body breaks down purines.) That means that 82% to 94% of the people with gout do not have a genetic link to the disease; it is primarily a lifestyle issue.

Certain medications can increase the risk of gout. These include:
Salicylates and medicines made from salicylic acid (such as aspirin)
Caffeine, including medicines containing caffeine
Levodopa (used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease)
Withdrawal of corticosteroid medications
Cyclosporine (used to help control rejection of transplanted organs)
Niacin in doses of 1000 mg per day may trigger an attack in someone with gout

In addition, surgery, trauma, and cancer treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy may also increase your risk of developing gout.

It is possible to develop gout with or without the risk factors listed above. However, the more risk factors you have, the greater your likelihood of developing gout. If you have a number of risk factors, ask your doctor what you can do to reduce your risk.

Reducing uric acid.....
It is known that Vitamin C reduces uric acid in people with gout – and there is simply no better form than Dr. Libby’s Vital C™. As little as 500 mg of Vitamin C daily can help the body reduce uric acid levels over time and a Vital C flush is a common solution recommended by Dr. Libby for people with gout. Folic acid is also a time-honored solution for the symptoms of high uric acid. And, according to legendary naturopaths Dr. Murray and Dr. Pizzorno, essential fatty acids like those found in OmegaPrime® can also be very useful.

How To Reduce Allergy Symptoms

Allergic rhinitis is the set of symptoms that occurs when you breathe in substances you are allergic to. These substances are called allergens and are small proteins.

Seasonal allergy (sometimes called hay fever) occurs during times of the year when allergens are in the air, like spring, summer and fall. The most common allergens are tree, grass or weed pollens. Perennial or persistent allergic rhinitis is caused by allergens that may be present year-round. These may include chemicals, dust, dust mites, cockroaches, animal dander or mold spores.

An allergic reaction occurs when your body's immune system overreacts to an allergen. People at highest risk are those who already exhibit some signs of other immune system irregularities, such as food allergies, eczema or asthma.

When you breathe in an allergen, mast cells in your nasal passages release a chemical called histamine. Histamine causes your nose to feel itchy and also causes swelling and mucus production in the nasal passages, runny nose, nasal congestion, sinus pressure, postnasal drip and cough, headache and dark circles under your eyes.

The two most common tests for airborne allergies are:
Skin prick test - A tiny bit of an allergen is placed under the skin with a needle. The doctor watches to see if the skin in that area becomes red, raised and itchy. This can be done for multiple allergens at the same time.

RAST testing - A small sample of blood is taken and tested for different allergens.

Help reduce symptoms......
Four studies in the medical literature have shown us ways to stabilize these mast cells and reduce the symptoms of allergies.
The first study was conducted in Korea on the Nopal fruit (Opuntia ficus indica). It showed significant benefit of Nopal fruit against allergies.
The second study was from Japan. This was an animal study that showed Vitamin B-12 reduced the allergic response in those with allergy to the same levels as those without allergy. One group of physicians in Dallas, Texas used this information to treat humans by giving them 3 milligrams of Vitamin B-12 sublingually. They report in Men’s Health that allergy symptoms decreased by 50% the first year and by 50% more the second year of sublingual B-12 use.
The third study in Helsinki, Finland used probiotics to stabilize mast cells and reduce allergy symptoms.
One of my best, time-tested approaches for allergy came from an older article out of Brussels, Belgium. It shows the absolute necessity of essential fatty acids (EFA) for allergy. A more recent article from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil also commented that EFA and probiotics together are even more effective.

So, what is your opinion: In recent years, have people become more allergic or less? Likely, you will notice more people suffering with allergies. As our world becomes more toxic, we become more sensitive. And as we become more deficient – especially in bioflavonoids, Vitamin B-12, probiotics and essential fatty acids – we are more prone to allergy. So, insulate yourself by taking your nutrients every day and isolate yourself from allergens by following the recommendations below.

Fish Oil Reduces Prostate Cancer Growth in Humans

November 13, 2011 - Byron Richards, CCN

Researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have proven that fish oil combined with a low fat diet can reduce the number of rapidly dividing prostate cancer cells. This is important because many men don't even know they have prostate cancer and others are trying to change their lifestyles and curtail the problem as part of medically supervised surveillance. This study is clear cut proof that fish oil is a potent anti-prostate cancer nutrient.

The participants ate a 15% fat diet along with 5 grams of fish oil per day (around 1000 mgs of DHA Docosahexaenoic acid Essential omega 3 fatty acid integral to the health of all cell membranes, nerve and brain function. Must be gotten through the diet via cold water oceanic fish or some very limited plant sources or taken as a supplement.). We know that the fat you eat ends up in your cell membranes and then influences the function of those cells. Too many omega 6 oils (such as corn and soy oil) relative to a lack of DHA Docosahexaenoic acid Essential omega 3 fatty acid integral to the health of all cell membranes, nerve and brain function. Must be gotten through the diet via cold water oceanic fish or some very limited plant sources or taken as a supplement./EPA Eicosapentanoic acid. Type of long chain essential fatty acid - Omega 3 oil. Works in concert with DHA. Must gotten through food sources such as deep cold water fish or some limited plant sources or taken as a supplement. , tilts the cell membranes into a more inflammatory condition that assists cancer growth. The typical Western high fat diet, high in omega 6 oils, and lacking in omega 3 fish oils, has been hypothesized to create such problems. This study actually proves it does.

The men in this study had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Some took the fish oil and ate low fat and others continued their Western diet for four - six weeks until their surgery to have their prostate removed. Their prostate cancer cells were then re-evaluated following the surgery. Those taking the fish oil were shown to have higher amounts of the omega 3 oils in their healthy prostate cells as well as their prostate cancer cells, proving that the oil that was consumed actually made it into the prostate gland.

Furthermore, those taking the fish oil had fewer rapidly dividing cancer cells. "The finding that the low-fat, fish oil diet reduced the number of rapidly dividing cells in the prostate cancer tissue is important because the rate at which the cells are dividing can be predictive of future cancer progression," said lead author Dr. William Aronson. "The lower the rate of proliferation, the lesser the chances that the cancer will spread outside the prostate, where it is much harder to treat… We are extremely pleased about our findings, which suggest that by altering the diet, we may favorably affect the biology of prostate cancer."

A great deal of human suffering could be avoided simply by ensuring an adequate intake of omega 3 fatty acids.

Vitamin D and Your Brain

by Brazos Minshew, TriVita's Chief Science Officer

I recently read an article in the medical and scientific literature that discussed the role of Vitamin D in the human brain. The article correlated the low levels of Vitamin D in the bloodstream with high levels of anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and oppositional-defiant disorder. The most important discussions, however, were about the role of Vitamin D in two plagues: autism and Alzheimer's disease.

The number of people diagnosed with autism is increasing at an epidemic rate. Greater than 1 in 150 children born today will have autism. The gender rate is also alarming: Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls.

No one can agree as to the cause of autism. This may be because there is more than one cause. In fact, the last time I counted there were 11 suspected causes. However, two things that nearly all children have in common are poor methylation (inability to use Vitamin B-12 to create whole proteins) and poor hydroxylation (inability to convert inactive Vitamin D into its active form).

The most common cause for these defects is toxicity: environmental toxins and/or geno-toxins (poisons created by abnormal genes).

Alzheimer's disease

There are three characteristics of Alzheimer's disease in the human brain: neurofibrillary tangles, beta-amyloid plaques and glial cell inflammation. Interestingly, some people with plaques and tangles - but no inflammation - appear to function normally into their advanced years. It is brain inflammation that seems to be the spark which lights the fire of Alzheimer's disease.

Vitamin D may help reduce inflammation in the brain. A notable attribute of Alzheimer's disease victims is low levels of Vitamin D.

The same two problems that exist in children with autism also afflict adults with Alzheimer's disease: poor methylation (inability to use Vitamin B-12 to create whole proteins) and poor hydroxylation (inability to convert inactive vitamin D into its active form). Methylation is measured by a blood test for homocysteine. And one of the ways to measure hydroxylation is with a blood test for Vitamin D.

Are autism and Alzheimer's disease related? At this point it is hard to say; perhaps it is even impossible to say that they are connected conditions. But they share remarkably similar imbalances in biochemistry and they share at least two common deficiencies: Vitamin B-12 and Vitamin D.

Certainly, it would be an amazing coincidence if they were not somehow linked, don't you think?

In the 1990s I was overwhelmed by the mountains of evidence linking homocysteine to the increase in autism and Alzheimer's disease. This was eventually linked back to a methylation defect that led to poor protein formation and Vitamin B-12 metabolism. Now, we are seeing new mountains of evidence emerging about hydroxylation defects leading to poor hormone formation and Vitamin D metabolism.

We can say with greater certainty than ever before that these imbalances are caused by toxicity, deficiency, injury and stress. Let's increase our efforts to combat these "causes" and reduce the chance of being victimized by the effects!

One of the oldest and most reliable natural remedies to support the immune system against various maladies!

Pro Silver is the modern version of mankind's oldest natural anti-microbial agent. We have progressed from using silver coins in the past to preserve milk and water, to using it as a dietary supplement today.

The historical use of silver is long and indisputable. For thousands of years, it has been used for the same reasons we are using it now in our Pro Silver supplement. From the earliest history of mankind, silver has been used in the making of food and drink vessels, as well as eating utensils.

Today, silver is being used in swimming pool filters, food cutting boards, bandages, burn dressings, and water filters for NASA.

Pro Silver contains only mineral and distilled water and is not a salt, iodide, protein, or gelatinous based product.

Silver: Comprehensive Immunity Protection For The Entire Family

The benefits of silver have been recorded historically for many years. From the late 1800's to the late 1930's, Colloidal Silver was used commonly in America and other cultures. The Chinese understood its cleansing properties. In the Ayurvedic tradition of India, it had been used medically. The benefits of silver have been researched and reported in such prestigious medical journals as The New England Journal of Medicine and the Lancet.

Seventy years ago, silver was widely used. Silver retailed at about $100.00 per ounce in the 1930's. Recent technology has brought the price down so that silver can now compete in the medical marketplace. Numerous articles in medical journals of silver can be found dating before 1940.

Widely used historically in cultures around the world, silver has previously been very expensive to administer. Owing to recent improvements on the original methods of production, silver is now available in a more concentrated form at a fraction of its previous cost.

What Is Ionic Silver?

Ionic Silver is a germicide and is tasteless, non-toxic and can be taken orally or applied externally. The EPA's Poison Control Center reports no toxicity listing for colloidal silver and considers it harmless in any concentration. Ionic silver is the safest and best all-around natural antibiotic germ fighter.

Pro Silver is tasteless, odorless, non-stinging and non-burning to sensitive tissues - even a baby's eyes. It may be taken orally, applied directly to cuts, scrapes, open sores, warts or used as a rinse for acne, eczema and other skin irritations. It may be gargled, dropped into eyes or ears, or inhaled into the nose.

We get silver and all minerals into the body through the food we eat. It gets into our food through living, healthy soil. Plants convert raw minerals to colloidal form. When we eat the plants, our bodies utilize the colloidal minerals gathered by the plants. These minerals enter the blood stream and are taken to the various organs of our body. Hence, we get silver from plants.

If digestion and assimilation are weak, or as the tissues age, we may develop a silver deficiency, and thus an impaired immune system. Also, many of our soils have been stripped of trace minerals through poor agricultural practices which also cause deficiencies and subsequent health problems.

The body has an innate ability to rejuvenate and restore itself to optimum health. When taken daily, Pro Silver acts an optimal immune system supporter by helping the body fight invaders.

Safe and Effective

Bacteria are becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics. The Los Angeles Times stated: "In the last decade, a broad resistance to antibiotics has begun to emerge. And, because bacteria can transfer genes among themselves, experts only expect that the resistance will grow. The potential nightmare is a super-microbe immune to all antibiotics that could wreak havoc."

Traditional antibiotics continue to lose their ability to kill certain strains of bacteria. Nearly every disease-causing organism known has become resistant to one or more antibiotics. Scientists know that the more an antibiotic is used, the quicker it tends to become useless due to bacterial resistance. On the other hand, microbes cannot develop resistance to silver as they can to traditional antibiotics.

There are no recorded side effects in the medical literature from the use of ionic silver. Additionally, there has never been a recorded case of a drug interaction. It is non-addicting, the body does not build up a tolerance to it, and studies show that colloidal silver is not deposited under the skin like other silver protein compounds that may cause gray or bluish skin.

  • Ionic Silver will not cause argyria, a discoloration of the skin caused by some forms of silver. Argyria is caused by silver protein products.
  • Ionic Silver does not interact or interfere with any medications.
  • Contains only pure water and pure silver.
  • Tasteless liquid, like water.

Pro Ionic Silver Testimonials

Why Does Quality and Purity Matter In A Fish Oil Supplement?

At Life's Abundance, they set a higher standard for all of our Sealogix products. We source our Omega-3's from fish located in some of the cleanest waters in the world from fisheries that are renewable and fully-sustainable. The fish oil is then molecularly distilled to concentrate and purify the oil.

Manufacturers of fish oil are required to test each batch they produce; however, in many cases, this testing is handled by the manufacturers themselves. Often testing is conducted prior to adding flavors and bottling, so the fish oil that is tested in-house may not necessarily be the same quality of fish oil delivered to the marketplace.

In addition to the standard manufacturer testing for every batch, we have enlisted the help of IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards), a non-affiliated third party and the internationally-respected source for fish oil analysis. IFOS scientifically tests and analyzes Sealogix. This validation testing ensures that you are getting a safe and effective fish oil supplement that you can feel confident giving to your family. We are proud to announce that Sealogix has been awarded an IFOS 5-Star Rating (the highest rating available) for quality, concentration and purity. How to Keep Your Heart Healthy

Death is Nature’s way of saying, “Slow down, take it easy”

Ahh, to slow down for a moment… To go through life relaxed instead of pedal-to-the-metal!
We call the cycle of chronic stress Fight or Flight. It describes the reaction of our nervous system when we are confronted with a life-threatening circumstance. Our nervous system governs homeostasis – which controls our hormones, sugar balance and energy production. Our nervous system controls our heart and vascular system as well.

The gas, the brakes…

Our car is equipped with an accelerator to make it go and brakes to make it stop.  Our nervous system is divided into two separate systems that function in much the same way. The sympathetic nervous system reacts and responds to stimuli from outside our body such as noise, cold and heat. It reacts to pain or even the threat of pain and loss. It reacts when you are tickled. It is “sympathetic” to emotions such as fear and anger.

Our parasympathetic nervous system works to bring us back into balance when stressful circumstances are past and the hormones of stress start to drop. The parasympathetic nervous system runs everything in your body: heart, brain, immune system, digestion, reproduction – everything!

The sympathetic nervous system may tear your body apart to try to solve a momentary crisis. The parasympathetic nervous system builds your body up and allows you to heal when the crisis has resolved.

We need to put the brakes on stress or it will put the brakes on our life!

Hormones, stress and heart attacks

If our body is parasympathetic-dominant we experience all the colors of life from an optimum state: our breathing is relaxed, our digestion is complete and our circulation is wide open. Our thyroid is busily building up our muscles, bones and organs and our heart is cooperating by ensuring a nutrient-rich supply of blood.

If our body is sympathetic-dominant it is stressed. Our thyroid cannot complete its building function so our brain pumps out more and more stimulating hormones. Our liver releases huge amounts of sugar and cholesterol. Our blood pressure increases and our heart rate increases as nutrients are choked off from non-Fight or Flight systems, such as breathing, reproduction and digestion.

One of the most vulnerable of all systems to sympathetic dominance is the cardiovascular system – your heart and blood vessels. If they have been constricted for too long because of stress, they will lose their ability to return to normal when you relax. Soon, semi-permanent changes will occur in these systems as we become accustomed to stressful living.

Running the engine of your car at top speed exhausts your fuel supply very quickly. Running your body in sympathetic dominance exhausts your nutrient reserves as well. This is especially true of your antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrients, such as Vitamins C and B-12, as well as essential fatty acids that serve as the primary fuel for your heart.

When your car runs out of fuel, it sputters and dies. It is the same way for your heart!

What to do

Deep breathing
Unlike your car, your body is designed to heal given the right circumstances. We can switch our nervous system to parasympathetic dominance by practicing deep breathing. Take “breathing breaks” for 10 minutes, twice daily. Practice deep breathing for 20 minutes before sleeping. This is a major step toward relaxing. Keep it up every day and in four to six months your cardiovascular system can begin to heal.

Enjoy low-stress exercise for at least 30 minutes daily. This will open your blood vessels and even help your body to build new blood vessels.

Use antioxidant nutrients such as Vital C™ and eat antioxidant-rich foods at every meal. Use anti-inflammatory supplements: Cholestria™ to help raise HDL (“good” cholesterol) and help reduce inflammatory LDL (“bad” cholesterol), and HCY Guard® (homocysteine is a very inflammatory toxin!). And fuel your heart with essential fatty acids from OmegaPrime®.

Take your foot off the gas with anti-stress exercises. Put more fuel in your tank with nutrients and nurturing. Slow down a little – or Nature will send you an unwanted message!

10 Tips For Stress Management

Before embarking on a stress management system – you need to identify what stresses you! A good indication is thinking of stressful situations – sometimes just the word ‘heavy traffic’ can stress you and cause physical symptoms – perhaps your pulse quickens and you feel ‘bothered’. You may also keep a journal, and when you feel stressed – take note of your situation and surroundings.

1. Breathe!

A deep breath can help your mind in a very specific way, increasing oxygen to the brain and helping you to relax. It can also allow those few seconds where you need to step back and evaluate the situation. Count to ten, or take a short walk, get your lungs working and breathe in oxygen, and exhale your stress!

2. Move.

Exercise is one of the best ways to combat stress. It provides a great way to relieve tension and releases natural brain chemicals to help you relax and actually feel better! Even a 3 minute walk or jog, or simple stretching or Pilates can help relieve tensions.

3. Eat.

Eating the wrong food gives your body the wrong tools to fight stress. Vegetables and fruit are the best stress fighters! They contain anti-oxidants which fight free radicals in the body on a cellular level, so stock up on healthy foods that give you energy throughout the day – such as fiber rich oats and healthy energy bars. The ‘bad’ stress hormone, Cortisol, can actually be reduced by eating correctly.

4. Listen.

Playing your favorite songs or listening to soothing melodies can help your body to relax. Sound is a great motivator for the brain, and studies have shown that certain melodies and sounds can help the brain unwind during stressful times.

5. Talk or write.

The worst thing one can do is keep stress bottled up. Learn to talk about your stresses to friends, family, fellow religious leaders or even a therapist. If you find it hard to talk about your stress, keep a journal or write down your emotions.

6. Rest.

Sleep is key. Always take the time to rest and let your mind and body re-charge. Stress can build up to a point where lack of sleep is the ultimate straw to break the camel’s back! If you are not one for afternoon naps, have an herbal tea in a sunny spot, or cuddle with a pet. This not only helps to release stress and tension, but also helps you calm the heart’s pace and protect your immune system. Meditation can also work wonders – if you are unsure of how to meditate, consult your library or nearest natural health center.

7. Plan.

Organize. This is one of the most important ways to beat stress. When things are organized, you are more likely to feel in control, less likely to get flustered, and more likely to succeed. Don’t leave things till the last minute, and always ask for help or ask questions if you are unsure. Do the ‘hardest’ tasks first in your day – you will have more energy in the mornings. Keep a to-do list with you at all times – as the saying goes: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”.

8. Delegate.

Learn to say “No!” It may seem like a simple step, but learning to say no can be hard for some people. Trying to please everyone often means that you are the one who ultimately lands up compromising, and feeling stressed. Say no. If asked to do a task or take on a responsibility, look at your “to do list” for the day. If doing it means crumbling under pressure – SAY NO! Saying no is one of the hardest things in life, but you are more likely to do a good job of the things you can manage, than doing a shabby job of things of all the things you can’t do.

9. Follow the voice inside.

You’ll notice happy people are usually following their intuition – doing the things that make them feel happy in life. Structure your life around activities that you love – the more you go with the flow – the less likely you are to do the things that stress you to the point of no return! We only live once, and so spend your time happy, with the ones you love, and strive every day to follow your heart.

10. Nurture through nature.

Nature has held the key for thousands of years – think about it, when was the last time you heard of a tribal stress crisis?! That’s because, the ancient people relied on nature’s natural ingredients to help reduce stress levels and were better equipped to deal with daily triggers. Sure, they didn’t have computer viruses and four-lane traffic like we do today – but they had other stress culprits such as wild animals and food shortages to deal with! They knew the advantages of using nature’s tried and tested ingredients – herbal remedies such as Melissa officinalis, Lavender and Passiflora incarnata that have been shown in modern research to help soothe the nerves and help balance the mind and nervous system. These ingredients are still available today – and just as effective!

Men’s Health: Common Issues and Natural Remedies

When it comes to their health, men tend to be more inclined than women to push aside health issues and hope that things will “take care of themselves”. Further, while they may strive to maintain physical health, men may be less likely to manage emotional and mental well-being.

Whether these behaviors are self-induced or subconscious due to societal pressures to be “tough” and “masculine”, health should not be a gender-based issue! Ignoring a nagging health condition or allowing a problem to go undiagnosed can lead to further complications.

Especially for men over 40, regular checkups should be made by an herbalist, homeopathic or general practitioner to evaluate general prostate health, cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

At this time, other health issues can also be mentioned and addressed, such as insomnia, depression, weight gain, etc.

Check out two of the most common internal and external health concerns and tips for natural support below.

Prostate Health

The three main disorders that can affect the prostate gland include: infection, enlarged prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia), and prostate cancer. All three can directly affect the functionality of the penis and lead to erectile dysfunction and low libido.

Since research suggests that diet and stress appear to be the main culprits of prostate disorders, it is very important to follow a healthy nutrition plan and manage tension. Be sure to include a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits into daily diets, as well as fresh fish. Choose whole grains rather than refined white breads, pasta, crackers, and rice. Avoid fattening meats and packaged, processed foods.

Herbal and homeopathic remedies can greatly support prostate health, especially Saw palmetto (Sabal serrulata), which has been studied for its association with promoting male sexual health, and therefore the health of the prostate gland and normal PSA levels.

Hypoxis rooperi (extract of African potato) is a plant containing nutrient values that are as high as and possibly greater than in modern vegetables. Hypoxis rooperi has been researched for its ability to support the health of the prostate gland and testicles.

Hair Loss

Another health issue most men are concerned about is hair loss. Permanent male-pattern baldness typically begins to affect men as early as their teens and early twenties, with visible hair loss or balding appearing first near the top of the head, with a receding hairline at the temples.

While genetics are responsible for most balding, herbal and homeopathic remedies can help to stimulate and encourage hair growth as well as support blood circulation, hormonal balance and thyroid functioning.

Herbs commonly used include Ginkgo biloba, Rosmarinus officinale and Xanthoxylum clavaherculis help to promote strong, abundant hair. Other powerful herbs such as Equisetum arvense, Avena sativa and Echinacea are effective combating hair loss and nourishing hair follicles.

AHA Issued Their First Ever Statement On Triglyceride Management And Omega-3 EPA/DHA

The American Heart Association (AHA) recently issued its first ever statement on triglyceride management that includes recommendations for Omega-3 EPA/DHA intake. Elevated triglyceride levels have long been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). According to the AHA more than 31% of the United States population has borderline high triglyceride levels. Furthermore, AHA’s 2006 statistical data estimates that 81,100,000 people in the United States have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease, claiming 831,272 lives in that same year.

In conjunction with other important lifestyle changes, the AHA recommends 0.5 - 1g of Omega-3 EPA and DHA for individuals with borderline fasting triglyceride levels (150-199mg/dL), 1 - 2g for individuals with high fasting triglyceride levels (200-499mg/dL), and 2 - 4g for individuals with very high fasting triglyceride levels (≥500mg/dL). The AHA has also previously recommended that normal healthy individuals consume a variety of fish (preferably oily), and a daily intake of 1g of Omega-3 EPA and DHA for patients with documented coronary heart disease.

The recent statement issued by AHA is a very positive step for improving consumers’ understanding of the role of triglycerides in CVD management. Although awareness of the health benefits of Omega-3 is very high among consumers, many still do not understand the different forms of Omega-3 (EPA, DHA and ALA), or the health benefits of each.

It is important for consumers to understand that fish provides both EPA and DHA, whereas most algae sources provide only DHA. Furthermore, while ALA is an essential fatty acid, many of the  reported health benefits associated with Omega-3 have been the result of supplementation with EPA and DHA. While the body can theoretically convert ALA into EPA and DHA, the actual conversion rate is very low. In fact, many studies suggest that the conversion rate can be as low as 1% or less. As such, fish, fish oil supplements, and food products fortified with fish oil are the best sources of Omega-3 for consumers.

What Is Stress & How Do You Overcome Feeling Stressed?

Are you stressed out? If you’re like most Americans, chances are the answer is, “Heck, yeah!” Unfortunately, stress is now just a way of life for too many of us. Whether it’s concerns over the uncertain economy, struggling to meet deadlines at work, handling family emergencies, dealing with relationship woes, or even tolerating daily traffic jams, there seems to be an unending parade of stressors in modern life.

Since this is National Stress Awareness Month, now’s a good time to discuss the different aspects of stress, how it can help or hurt you, and the coping mechanisms that can diminish it. If you’re already feeling too stressed to read the rest of this article, you really need to … so take a deep breath and read on.

What is stress?

The term “stress” is used as an umbrella term that covers the range of physiological responses to certain life events, such as an imminent threat, a heated argument, and real or imagined danger. When you react to stress, your body is trying to protect itself in the face of certain challenges. By releasing adrenaline and cortisol hormones, your body readies you for action. Consequently, your blood pressure rises, breathing becomes more rapid and your heart pounds. These physiological changes help to boost your strength, bolster your stamina and hone your focus.

If you’re stressed, you’re not alone

According to a March survey, 77% of Americans suffer from job-related stress. Topping the list of workplace stressors was low pay; however, commuting, unreasonable workloads and layoff fears were not too far behind.

Common negative stressors include the death of a loved one, divorce, injury or illness. Even though most people associate stress with negative situations, stress can also arise in positive scenarios, too. Any highly charged situation, especially one which forces you to quickly react, can cause stress. Positive stressors include marriage, buying a house, having a child and getting a promotion. And, depending on your personality, you may suffer from self-imposed stress, from mental states like pessimism, perfectionism or the inability to accept uncertainty.

Are you a serial stressor?

Although stress helps you meet short-term challenges, chronic stress can leave your body both over stimulated and depleted, risking damage to your health. Long-term stress can suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, and can even lead to premature aging, leaving you more vulnerable to emotional problems such as anxiety and depression.

These are serious health concerns so we encourage you to take time to consider how you’ll react in various situations. Often, those who suffer from chronic stress don’t actually recognize when they are stressed. The warning signs include constantly worrying, feeling overwhelmed, sleeping too little and frequent colds. If you believe you might be suffering from chronic stress, the first step is to talk with your doctor. Beyond that, here are some specific ideas about how to reduce the impacts of stress in your life.

To start, coping mechanisms such as smoking, overeating, avoiding social interactions, lashing out at others and abusing drugs are known to be harmful to your health. Fortunately, there are healthier ways to manage stress, including …

Guided Imagery … Think of a peaceful setting. Imagine all the details, including visuals, smells and sounds. Think about how calm you feel. Use this process whenever you are faced with stressful situations.

Talk to a Friend … Expressing your feelings to a trusted friend can lighten your load. Remember, the more you isolate yourself, the more susceptible you will be to stress.

Aromatherapy … Thanks to the nose’s strong ties to the brain, aromatherapy offers a quick and easy way to foster a relaxed state of mind. Lavender, citrus and vanilla are effective scents that can be purchased at health food stores.

Exercise … Walk, swim or take a bike ride. When you exercise at a certain level over a period of time, the body produces chemicals that can make you feel good. And, you’ll probably drop some weight, too.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids … Serotonin, a hormone found naturally in the brain, is responsible for controlling emotional responses and creating a sense of well-being. The EPA and DHA present in Omega-3 fatty acids help maintain healthy levels of serotonin.

Eat a Healthy Diet … Try to avoid fast foods loaded with fat and preservatives, overly salted foods, caffeine and sugar. Make sure your diet includes proteins, whole grains, fresh veggies and plenty of water.

Laugh … Laughing actually induces physical changes in your body. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain.”

Meditate … It’s not necessary to take a class or even buy a book. Find a comfortable and quiet spot and think about all of the positive things in your life. Make an effort to feel truly thankful for each of them.

Enjoy Nature … Taking a walk outdoors can do you a world of good. Basking in sunshine not only feels good, it is good for your health, when taken in moderation. Sunshine helps stimulate serotonin, which can promote a good mental outlook.

Help Someone Else … Research reveals that people who engage in altruistic behavior are inclined to enjoy better mental health.

Learn to Say No … You may be surprised to learn that many people find it difficult to say “no”. Reserving this right every once in a while can keep you from filling up every minute of every day.

Indulge in Your Hobbies … When you do something you love to do, you go to a more positive emotional level.

Learn from Others … Do you admire how a friend or co-worker handles stressful situations? If so, observe (or simply ask them) how they do it. You may learn a helpful trick or two.

Do Nothing … Sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that it’s okay to just do nothing at all for a while. Stop whatever activity is at-hand and savor the moment.

Ask for Help … If you start to feel overwhelmed by chores or tasks, ask for help. It’s as simple as that!

Smile … Try it right now. You may find this minimal act an instant stress reducer.

Groove More … Treat yourself to some excellent tunes, preferably up-tempo.

Do One Thing at a Time … Smart phones and computers are great, but sometimes they can boggle the senses, increasing stress.

Hydrotherapy … Soaking in a hot bath sprinkled with epsom salts can help release muscle tension and get you ready for a good night’s sleep.

Curl up with a Friend … Spending quality time with your companion animal can lower blood pressure and stress levels.

No matter which techniques you choose to incorporate in your routine, we truly hope they’ll help you to live a more abundant life, with less abundant stress!

Fish Oil Part of Regimen to Protect Against Heart Disease

In the first large-scale study of its kind, researchers from the Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan investigated the health effects of daily Omega-3 supplements in combination with a drug commonly prescribed for those at-risk for heart attacks, angina and other coronary events.

Patients were all identified as having higher than average levels of cholesterol. They were divided into two groups: a main group that included nearly 15,000 participants with no prior history of coronary artery disease, and a secondary group with over 3,600 subjects with a prior history of coronary artery disease. Some of each group were given highly-purified fish oil supplements in addition to statins (enzyme blockers that lower cholesterol levels in the blood by reducing the production of cholesterol by the liver), while others were given only the prescription drug.

Over the course of the nearly five-year study, there was a significant difference between those receiving the fish oil supplements and those who did not. While both therapies proved effective in reducing levels of cholesterol, participants taking the fish oil supplements and statins had a 19% reduction in risk for heart illness. The research also noted that a similar, preventative benefit from daily fish oil supplementation that may convey to those not currently deemed at-risk for heart problems.

How To Protect Yourself From Radiation Exposure

The unfolding events relating to Japan's damaged nuclear reactors is raising a real concern in the U.S. If one or several of these reactors meltdown radioactive particles will following the jet stream and will not only impact Los Angeles to Alaska but effect the entire continent.
Protecting the thyroid with iodine seems to be about all public health officials are willing to recommend to the public. However, there are other even more important steps every person should consider. Radiation interaction within your body generates massive amounts of damaging free radicals, in turn potentially inducing DNA damage that may lead to future cancer -- often manifesting a decade or two later. This means it is a good idea to maximize your overall antioxidant defenses. Ideally, this system of defense should be bolstered in advance to provide maximal protection. Unfortunately the antioxidant defense systems of most Americans are in a poor or weakened state.
Research shows the best ways to protect your body, cells, and DNA from Free-Radical damage is by 1) Raising your body's Master Antioxidant Defense Chemical Glutathione
2) Raising your Body's cellular ATP and 3) Taking a Broad Spectrum of Antioxidant compounds1,2.
Our company is one of the few companies that specializes in cellular or cyto antioxidant defense. The ingredients in Clear DTX, and ATP R3 are known to support your bodies natural production of Glutathione and ATP at the cellular level.*

Omega-3’s Help To Preserve Cognitive Functioning

In a study featured in Neurology, 1,613 subjects were examined between the ages of 45 and 70, testing the correlation between Omega-3 consumption and the preservation of cognitive abilities. Mental functioning was gauged on multiple measures by researchers (memory, psychomotor speed, higher-level information processing and overall cognition), and participants completed a food consumption questionnaire to record their eating patterns, especially as their diets related to intake of fatty fish.

Consumption of long-chain polyunsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish was positively associated with a reduced risk of mental impairment, both on measures of overall cognitive function and psychomotor speed. Researchers also noted a significant correlation between higher consumption rates of cholesterol (saturated fats) and an increased risk of impaired memory and cognitive flexibility.

The researchers concluded that Omega-3’s may benefit cognitive performance due to their anti-inflammatory properties. The researchers further speculate that the diminished cognitive performance associated with lower intake of Omega-3’s may be a predictor of Alzheimer’s Disease later in life.

Show Your Heart Some Love with Omega-3

HeartScope February is not just for lovers anymore. The American Heart Association (AHA) has officially dubbed February “American Heart Month”. So, what better time to start showing your heart more love than in February? The Center for Disease Control and Prevention claims that heart disease is the leading cause of deaths in the United States. Both the Mayo Clinic and the AHA suggest that consuming 2-3 (3.5 ounce) servings of omega-3 rich foods a week can help support a healthy heart.

How do you know that you are providing your body with enough omega-3’s? Here are a few ways to ensure that you are consuming the recommended amounts of omega-3 fatty acids:

Eat Fish - All fish contain omega-3’s. The fattier the fish, the higher the omega-3 levels. Your best bets are fish with high levels of omega-3’s, such as mackerel, salmon, sardines, herring and tuna. Be sure to use caution when consuming large amounts of fish, as some have elevated levels of mercury, which could lead to health risks, especially in pregnant women. In order to make your fish selection an easy one, the EPA has published safe eating guidelines. For more information, visit and type ‘safe eating guideline’ in the search box at the top of the home page.

Go Nuts - Most nuts, seeds and beans also contain omega-3’s. The best sources are soybeans, walnuts, flaxseed and pumpkin seeds.

Cook with Oil - Instead of cooking in vegetable oil, try a more heart-healthy option by using olive oil, sunflower seed oil, soybean oil, flaxseed oil or canola oil.

Get Fortified - When you are shopping at the local market, keep your eyes open for foods fortified with omega-3. Most will prominently display “Enhanced or Fortified with Omega-3” on the label. Juices, eggs, pastas, cereals, breads and even soups are just some of the products that now feature heart healthy omega-3’s.

How can you truly be certain that you are getting plenty of omega-3’s? Taking an omega-3 fish oil supplement daily is a great way; however, be sure to choose an ultra-refined product. To be sure you are getting the highest quality, choose a fish oil supplement that has an IFOS 5-Star Rating. This validation testing ensures that you are getting a safe and effective fish oil supplement that you can feel confident giving to your family.

Do you lead a heart-healthy lifestyle? Finding out is easy! The AHA has developed an interactive online action plan for you to determine if you are leading a healthy life. It is called “Life’s Simple 7”. Take the test and discover the state of your heart. The program will provide you with simple steps to achieve a healthier heart and lifestyle. So, show your heart some love and visit and take the challenge today.

Dyslexia, Diet and Omega 3 Fish Oils

Dyslexia appears to be a close cousin of attention deficient disorder and affects about 5 percent of Americans. Dyslexics often see letters backwards or turned sideways and have a tough time reading printed text. Just like those with ADD, people with dyslexia have a deficiency of long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids in their blood lipids. Supplementation with long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids should, therefore, reduce this problem. This thinking makes perfect sense because the retina in each of your eyes (which is responsible for the quality of the visual input to the brain) has the highest concentration of DHA in the body. Like the children with ADD, those with dyslexia will require the combination of high-dose fish oil and insulin control. Like the children with ADD, children with dyslexia initially require between 9 and 18 grams per day of ultra- refined long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids to see an improvement in their condition.

Does Your Living Situation Whittle or Widen Your Waistline?

by A. Grano

An article recently came out by Judith J. Wurtman, PhD, who made a statement that living alone may actually be detrimental to weight loss efforts, despite the popular notion that single dwellers would have an easier time controlling their diets.

Pitfalls of Solo Eating

The reasons why? The article suggested that people who live alone may be more likely to fall under one of three types: ‘emotional eaters’, who eat due to loneliness; ‘boredom eaters’, who nosh quickly through meals then snack throughout the evening because they do not have the drawn-out process of meal preparation and cleanup; or ‘mindless eaters’, who are unaware of the calories they are consuming while eating ready-made foods in front of the TV.

Pitfalls of Group Eating

Conversely, people who are trying to watch their waistlines and live in a larger household may have to contend with the temptation of junk food lying around for those who have faster metabolisms and can eat more calories without weight gain, those who insist on preparing only certain types of foods without consideration of the person watching his or her weight, or those who persuade others to eat something too as part of a mealtime bonding ritual or hobby. Maintaining regular mealtimes is yet another challenge because of how difficult it can be to coordinate different schedules.

Solutions for Every Situation

Living alone or living with others each presents its own challenges, but staying motivated to eat well is achievable regardless. Planning menus and sticking to them is important for anyone, as it eliminates added calories for those mindless snackers, and can help others in the household to understand that healthy meals are important to you. If getting others to cooperate on your meal suggestions is a struggle, try to work together to find a happy medium. Having support from your family, partner, or friends is important and a little communication can go a long way.

Scientists Learn How Food Affects The Brain: Omega 3 Especially Important

Article From ScienceDaily (July 11, 2008) — In addition to helping protect us from heart disease and cancer, a balanced diet and regular exercise can also protect the brain and ward off mental disorders.

"Food is like a pharmaceutical compound that affects the brain," said Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, a UCLA professor of neurosurgery and physiological science who has spent years studying the effects of food, exercise and sleep on the brain. "Diet, exercise and sleep have the potential to alter our brain health and mental function. This raises the exciting possibility that changes in diet are a viable strategy for enhancing cognitive abilities, protecting the brain from damage and counteracting the effects of aging."

Gómez-Pinilla analyzed more than 160 studies about food's affect on the brain; the results of his analysis appear in the journal Nature Reviews Neuroscience.

Omega-3 fatty acids -- found in salmon, walnuts and kiwi fruit -- provide many benefits, including improving learning and memory and helping to fight against such mental disorders as depression and mood disorders, schizophrenia, and dementia, said Gómez-Pinilla, a member of UCLA's Brain Research Institute and Brain Injury Research Center.

Synapses in the brain connect neurons and provide critical functions; much learning and memory occurs at the synapses, Gómez-Pinilla said.

"Omega-3 fatty acids support synaptic plasticity and seem to positively affect the expression of several molecules related to learning and memory that are found on synapses," Gómez-Pinilla said. "Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for normal brain function.

"Dietary deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids in humans has been associated with increased risk of several mental disorders, including attention-deficit disorder, dyslexia, dementia, depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia," he said. "A deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids in rodents results in impaired learning and memory."

Children who had increased amounts of omega-3 fatty acids performed better in school, in reading and in spelling and had fewer behavioral problems, he said.

Preliminary results from a study in England show that school performance improved among a group of students receiving omega-3 fatty acids. In an Australian study, 396 children between the ages 6 and 12 who were given a drink with omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients (iron, zinc, folic acid and vitamins A, B6, B12 and C) showed higher scores on tests measuring verbal intelligence and learning and memory after six months and one year than a control group of students who did not receive the nutritional drink. This study was also conducted with 394 children in Indonesia. The results showed higher test scores for boys and girls in Australia, but only for girls in Indonesia.

Getting omega-3 fatty acids from food rather than from capsule supplements can be more beneficial, providing additional nutrients, Gómez-Pinilla said.

Scientists are learning which omega-3 fatty acids seem to be especially important. One is docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, which is abundant in salmon. DHA, which reduces oxidative stress and enhances synaptic plasticity and learning and memory, is the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in cell membranes in the brain.

"The brain and the body are deficient in the machinery to make DHA; it has to come through our diet," said Gómez-Pinilla, who was born and raised in salmon-rich Chile and eats salmon three times a week, along with a balanced diet. "Omega-3 fatty acids are essential."

A healthy diet and exercise can also reduce the effect of brain injury and lead to a better recovery, he said.

Recent research also supports the hypothesis that health can be passed down through generations, and a number of innovative studies point to the possibility that the effects of diet on mental health can be transmitted across generations, Gómez-Pinilla said.

A long-term study that included more than 100 years of birth, death, health and genealogical records for 300 Swedish families in an isolated village showed that an individual's risk for diabetes and early death increased if his or her paternal grandparents grew up in times of food abundance rather than food shortage.

"Evidence indicates that what you eat can affect your grandchildren's brain molecules and synapses," Gómez-Pinilla said. "We are trying to find the molecular basis to explain this."

Controlled meal-skipping or intermittent caloric restriction might provide health benefits, he said.

Excess calories can reduce the flexibility of synapses and increase the vulnerability of cells to damage by causing the formation of free radicals. Moderate caloric restriction could protect the brain by reducing oxidative damage to cellular proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, Gómez-Pinilla said.

The brain is highly susceptible to oxidative damage. Blueberries have been shown to have a strong antioxidant capacity, he noted.

In contrast to the healthy effects of diets that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, diets high in trans fats and saturated fats adversely affect cognition, studies indicate.

Junk food and fast food negatively affect the brain's synapses, said Gómez-Pinilla, who eats fast food less often since conducting this research. Brain synapses and several molecules related to learning and memory are adversely affected by unhealthy diets, he said.

Emerging research indicates that the effects of diet on the brain, combined with the effects of exercise and a good night's sleep, can strengthen synapses and provide other cognitive benefits, he added.

In Okinawa, an island in Japan where people frequently eat fish and exercise, the lifespan is one of the world's longest, and the population has a very low rate of mental disorders, Gómez-Pinilla noted.

Folic acid is found in various foods, including spinach, orange juice and yeast. Adequate levels of folic acid are essential for brain function, and folate deficiency can lead to neurological disorders such as depression and cognitive impairment. Folate supplementation, either by itself or in conjunction with other B vitamins, has been shown to be effective in preventing cognitive decline and dementia during aging and enhancing the effects of antidepressants. The results of a recent randomized clinical trial indicate that a three-year folic acid supplementation can help reduce the age-related decline in cognitive function.

In patients with major depression and schizophrenia, levels of a signaling molecule known as brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, are reduced. Antidepressants elevate BDNF levels, and most treatments for depression and schizophrenia stimulate BDNF. Here, too, omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial, as is the curry spice curcumin, which has been shown to reduce memory deficits in animal models of Alzheimer's disease and brain trauma. BDNF is most abundant in the hippocampus and the hypothalamus -- brain areas associated with cognitive and metabolic regulation.

The high consumption of curcumin in India may contribute to the low prevalence of Alzheimer's disease on the subcontinent.

In humans, a mutation in a BDNF receptor has been linked to obesity and impairments in learning and memory.

"BDNF is reduced in the hippocampus, in various cortical areas and in the serum of patients with schizophrenia," Gómez-Pinilla said. "BDNF levels are reduced in the plasma of patients with major depression."

Smaller food portions with the appropriate nutrients seem to be beneficial for the brain's molecules, such as BDNF, he said.

Gómez-Pinilla showed in 1995 that exercise can have an effect on the brain by elevating levels of BDNF.

He noted that while some people have extremely good genes, most of us are not so lucky and need a balanced diet, regular exercise and a good night's sleep.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Dangers of Chantix Revealed - When Quitting Smoking Becomes Deadly

Many smokers seeking a cessation solution probably thought they had found a safe, fool-proof method with Pfizer’s introduction of Chantix, which targets the nicotine receptors in the brain. However, reported dangerous side effects of Chantix have recently surfaced, causing so much controversy that the FAA banned pilots and air traffic controllers from taking it after concluding a series of investigative reports.

Chantix warnings include the possibility of experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors, seizures, loss of consciousness, hallucinations, as well as vivid nightmares and sleepwalking episodes. Others reported becoming addicted to Chantix.

Chantix problems don’t end there. As of today, and with 988 reports, Chantix is ranked first among all drugs in reported problems. Once hailed as the most innovative drug to help smoker’s overcome nicotine addiction, Pfizer’s new wonder drug was ten years in the making and after the FDA approved it as a smoke cessation aid, Chantix entered the pharmaceutical market at full force and received rave reviews in the process for its ability to take away the drug-induced pleasure of smoking cigarettes.

Meanwhile, given the new reports of dangerous side effects of Chantix, what is a smoker looking to quit to do? The damages and effects of smoking cigarettes have long been known, and more people now than ever have made the choice of giving up smoking– but it’s definitely not easy. Some doctors agree that nicotine addiction can be even harder to let go of then alcohol and illegal substances, and according to Pfizer’s web site, “Smoking cessation, with or without treatment, is associated with nicotine withdrawal symptoms."

Nicotine addiction is actually more than a habit, according to Dr. Neal L. Benowitz of the University of California, “Tobacco addiction is best considered a chronic disease, with most smokers requiring repeated interventions over time before achieving permanent abstinence”.

So if withdrawal symptoms cannot be avoided, why add the possibility of experiencing potentially deadly side effects to the recipe? Natural remedies can be used to aid the difficult process of quitting smoking– while avoiding unnecessary side effects.

Pleasant smoking effects such as reduced tension and stress can be counterbalanced with certain herbs by supporting the nervous system and helping to maintain balanced serotonin levels in the brain. Natural remedies can also address the irritability and restlessness associated with withdrawal. In order to successfully stick to a cessation program, it is essential to support these bodily systems.

Herbs to help quit smoking also generally aid the body’s detoxification process. Detoxifying the body with a wholesome diet, regular exercise, and the help of natural remedies will also help in dutifully following a plan of improving health.

What Are Omega 3 Fatty Acids & What Makes SeaLogix Fish Oil Better Than Other Fish Oils?

Sealogix fish oil What are Omega-3 fatty acids?
Omega-3’s belong to a group of fatty acids known as long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Because the body does not manufacture them, Omega-3's are classified as "essential fatty acids" (EFA’s), as it is essential they be obtained from food. There are three important Omega-3 fatty acids: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are found in fish, while ALA is found only in plant foods such as flaxseed meal. The body can convert ALA into small amounts of EPA and DHA, but recent studies have indicated that our bodies are somewhat inefficient in this conversion. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement your diet with these nutrients in order to significantly change your levels of Omega-3’s.

What is sesamin?
Naturally found in sesame seeds as lignans, sesamin comes from the 1% solid portion of the kernel’s oil. Sesame and sesame lignans are associated with health benefits in humans.

How much sesamin is in each serving of Life's Abundance Sealogix (120 capsules)?
Four capsules contains 68 mg of sesame extract, which is 60% sesamin. Therefore, four capsules contains 40.8 mg of sesamin.

What do Omega-3 fatty acids do for the body?
The Omega-3’s EPA and DHA are recognized for their health benefits in all life stages. They are important building blocks for every cell in your body, which requires these crucial components to grow, develop and maintain health.* These fatty acids are an integral part of cell membranes and are precursors of several important cellular messengers.* Studies have demonstrated that EPA is important for optimal brain function and contributes to the reduction of cellular inflammation.* DHA has been recognized for brain, visual and nervous system health and development.* Additionally, these essential fatty acids work together to contribute to good heart health.*

What is the richest source of Omega-3 fatty acids?
Fish oil is the richest source for eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Cold-water fish, like anchovies, salmon and sardines, are considered the best source for these essential fatty acids. It is important to remember, that all omega-3's are not created equal. You would need almost four tablespoons of flaxseed oil to get the same amount of EPA and DHA found in one teaspoon of Sealogix! That's approximately ten times as much flaxseed oil than fish oil.

Why should I take a fish oil supplement?
Changes in food preferences and the impact of modern food processing in Western society have led to a significant decrease in average dietary intake of Omega-3 fatty acids. As a result, most American diets contain far more Omega-6’s than Omega-3’s. In fact, it is estimated that the average American has between twenty to fifty times the amount of Omega-6’s as they do Omega-3’s. Recent studies have indicated that this kind of imbalance can set the stage for a host of health problems. To promote a healthier fatty acid ratio, it is advisable to avoid Omega-6’s (which are commonly found in fried foods, commercial baked goods and some margarines), and eat more baked or broiled seafood and supplement the diet with a high-quality fish oil like Life's Abundance Sealogix Fish Oil.

What are the health benefits associated with taking Omega-3 EFA’s from fish oil?
Scientific evidence has indicated that a diet rich in Omega-3 essential fatty acids helps support:
  • A Healthy Brain
  • A Healthy Heart
  • A Healthy immune system
  • Healthy joint movement
  • Healthy kidneys
  • A balanced mood and sense of wellbeing
  • Strength and stamina
  • And helps maintain cholesterol levels that are already within the normal range*

We invite you to review our extensive research section, which provides summaries of recent scientific inquiries into the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil.

Why does purity matter with regard to fish oil?
Unfortunately, pollution has affected the water quality of all of our oceans. The contaminants in our waters include toxins like mercury, PCB’s, arsenic, lead and cadmium. Consequently, many fish now contain these undesirable elements. That is why it is very important to choose a fish oil that is molecularly distilled. Molecular distillation is a process that concentrates and purifies the fish oil. It is also important to select a fish oil product that is tested for concentration, toxicity and safety by an independent third party. Supplementing your diet with a pharmaceutical-grade fish oil like Sealogix allows you to safely get the additional Omega-3 fatty acids you need.

Bhaskaran S, Santanam N, Penumetcha M, Parthasarathy S. Inhibition of atherosclerosis in low-density lipoprotein receptor-negative mice by sesame oil. J Med Food. 2006 Winter;9(4):487-90.

Study Abstract

Department of Pathology, Louisiana State University, Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, LA, USA.

Diet has profound effects on the development of atherosclerosis. Fatty acid composition, antioxidants, and other components such as lignans have major effects on the atherosclerotic process. Sesame oil has both mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acid constituents in equal proportions. In addition, it also has high levels of numerous antioxidants and inducers of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor. The objective of this study was to determine the anti-atherosclerotic effects of sesame oil. In this study, male low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor (LDLR) -/- mice were fed atherogenic diet or atherogenic diet reformulated with the same level of sesame oil (sesame oil diet). Plasma lipids and atherosclerotic lesions were quantified after 3 months of feeding. Sesame oil-containing diet significantly reduced the atherosclerotic lesion formation and plasma cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL cholesterol levels in LDLR -/- mice. These findings suggest that sesame oil could inhibit atherosclerosis lesion formation effectively, perhaps because of the synergistic actions of fatty acid and nonsaponifiable components.

Chen PR, Chien KL, Su TC. Dietary sesame reduces serum cholesterol and enhances antioxidant capacity in hypercholesterolemia. Nutr Res. 2005;25(6): 559-67.

Study Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of sesame on lowering serum lipids and enhancing antioxidant capacity in 21 hyperlipidemic patients. Subjects were instructed to consume their regular diet for 2 weeks before starting the experimental diet. The experimental diet with 40 g roasted sesame was consumed for 4 weeks and the regular diet followed for another 4 weeks. Body weights and fasting blood were determined at weeks 0, 4, and 8. The results showed that the diet with sesame significantly decreased the levels of serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. The time for erythrocyte hemolysis and the lag phase of LDL oxidation were significantly increased by sesame ingestion. A diet containing sesame slightly reduced the levels of thiobarbituric acid–reactive substances in LDL. The beneficial effects of sesame disappeared when patients returned to their regular diets. Sesame in this study appeared to exert beneficial effects on serum lipids and to improve antioxidant capacity in hypercholesterolemic patients.

Hirose N, Inoue T, Nishihara K, et al. Inhibition of cholesterol absorption and synthesis in rats by sesamin. J Lipid Res. 1991 May;32(4):629-38.

Study Abstract

Laboratory of Nutrition Chemistry, Kyushu University School of Agriculture, Fukuoka, Japan.
The effects of sesamin, a lignan from sesame oil, on various aspects of cholesterol metabolism were examined in rats maintained on various dietary regimens. When given at a dietary level of 0.5% for 4 weeks, sesamin reduced the concentration of serum and liver cholesterol significantly irrespective of the presence or absence of cholesterol in the diet, except for one experiment in which the purified diet free of cholesterol was given. On feeding sesamin, there was a decrease in lymphatic absorption of cholesterol accompanying an increase in fecal excretion of neutral, but not acidic, steroids, particularly when the cholesterol-enriched diet was given. Sesamin inhibited micellar solubility of cholesterol, but not bile acids, whereas it neither bound taurocholate nor affected the absorption of fatty acids. Only a marginal proportion (ca. 0.15%) of sesamin administered intragastrically was recovered in the lymph. There was a significant reduction in the activity of liver microsomal 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase after feeding sesamin, although the activity of hepatic cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase, drug metabolizing enzymes, and alcohol dehydrogenase remained uninfluenced. Although the weight and phospholipid concentration of the liver increased unequivocally on feeding sesamin, the histological examination by microscopy showed no abnormality, and the activity of serum GOT and GPT remained unchanged. Since sesamin lowered both serum and liver cholesterol levels by inhibiting absorption and synthesis of cholesterol simultaneously, it deserves further study as a possible hypocholesterolemic agent of natural origin.

Study Abstract

Department of Food and Nutrition, Sugiyama Jogakuen University, Nagoya 464-8662, Japan.

We have previously reported that dietary sesamin and sesaminol, major lignans of sesame seed, elevate the alpha-tocopherol concentration and decrease the thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) concentration in the plasma and liver of rats. In this study, the effects of dietary sesamin and sesaminol on the lipid peroxidation in the plasma and tissues of rats fed docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n-3) were examined. Male Wistar rats (4-wk-old) were divided into the following six experimental groups: control group, fed a basal diet: sesamin group, fed a diet with sesamin (2 g/kg); sesaminol group, fed a diet with sesaminol (2 g/kg); DHA group, fed a diet containing DHA (5 g/kg); DHA + sesamin group, fed a diet containing DHA with sesamin; and DHA + sesaminol group, fed a diet containing DHA with sesaminol. Each diet contained either 0.01 or 0.05 g D-alpha-tocopherol/kg, and the rats were fed the respective experimental diet for 5 wk. The dietary DHA elevated the TBARS concentration and also increased the red blood-cell hemolysis induced by the dialuric acid. The dietary sesamin and sesaminol lowered the TBARS concentrations and decreased the red blood hemolysis. The dietary sesamin and sesaminol elevated the alpha-tocopherol concentrations in the plasma, liver, and brain of the rats fed a diet with or without DHA. These results suggest that dietary sesame lignans decrease lipid peroxidation as a result of elevating the alpha-tocopherol concentration in rats fed DHA.

Study Abstract

Laboratory of Food and Biodynamics, Nagoya University Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences, Nagoya 464-8601, Japan.

Plant glucosides possess antioxidative properties due to their ability to scavenge free radicals. Sesame seeds contain a class of these compounds, the sesaminol glucosides. To evaluate their antioxidative activity in vivo, we fed rabbits diets containing 1% cholesterol (Chol) with or without 10% defatted sesame flour (DSF) (containing 1% sesaminol glucosides) for 90 d. We determined the susceptibility of their tissues to oxidation ex vivo as well as serum total cholesterol (TC), phospholipid (PL), triglyceride (TG) and HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations. Serum TC, HDL-C, PL and TG levels were unaffected by the addition of DSF. The HDL-C in the Chol + DSF group was greater than in the Chol group at 45 d. Both were greater than in the groups that did not consume cholesterol. Liver TC and TG were significantly lower in rabbits fed the diet containing DSF plus 1% cholesterol than in those fed 1% cholesterol alone. Lipid peroxidation activity, measured as 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), was lower in the liver (P < 0.05) and serum (P = 0.06) of rabbits fed DSF plus cholesterol than in rabbits fed the cholesterol diet. Although we did not detect sesaminol glucosides in peripheral tissues, we observed abundant quantities of sesaminol in rabbits fed DSF, the principal metabolite. Our findings suggest that feeding DSF to rabbits does not protect cholesterol-induced hypercholesterolemia, but may decrease susceptibility to oxidative stress in rabbits fed cholesterol, perhaps due to the antioxidative activity of sesaminol.

Compare Life's Abundance SeaLogix Fish Oil To Your Current Fish Oil Brand - Does It Stack Up?

Thanks in large part to the superior quality, purity and concentration of nutrients, Sealogix represents an exceptional value compared to other market brands. To demonstrate the overall value of our formula, we have provided the following comparison chart, which matches Sealogix against competing brands. To create a meaningful, apples-to-apples comparison, we calculated our chart based upon the two most prevalent nutrients in omega-3’s – the long-chain fatty acids EPA and DHA. The prices listed in the chart below demonstrate the costs associated with 1,000 mg of omega-3's (DHA/EPA).* You will note that the Sealogix Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil supplements beat the competition by a wide margin: the Sealogix 8-ounce liquid costs $0.45 per 1,000 mg, the Sealogix with Sesamin 120 capsules cost $0.51 per 1,000 and the Sealogix with Sesamin 240 capsules cost $0.54 per 1,000.

While price may be your primary source for comparison, it shouldn’t be the only measure. When it comes to providing the very best for you and your family, it is vital to take into account the purity and safety of a given fish oil supplement. That’s why Sealogix is subjected to stringent scientific testing, the results of which are posted online for your review. All of our Sealogix formulas are tested by IFOS, the International Fish Oil Standards organization, widely recognized as the world’s premier fish oil testing agency. As noted in the comparison chart, all Sealogix supplements have achieved IFOS’s highest possible rating – 5 Stars.

* Although there is no established RDA for Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA and DHA), much of the medical research on the health benefits of these nutrients is conducted using amounts of 1,000 mg and up.

The information for this comparison was acquired from reputable Internet web sites during March and April of 2009. This comparison chart focuses on the cost of 1,000 mg of Omega-3's (EPA and DHA) only. Although some of the products used in this comparison contain additional ingredients that may be beneficial to your health, only the cost of the long-chain Omega-3's (EPA and DHA) were calculated. The Sealogix brands used in the above comparison are Sealogix Omega-3 Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil Supplement (8-ounce Liquid) and Sealogix Omega-3 Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil Supplement with Sesamin (120 and 240 capsules) and the costs per bottle are Autoship prices.

Are All Omega-3s Created Equal?

There seems to be a lot of confusion out there as to the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. This article will break down the major sources of omega-3’s and give you the information you need to make educated choices.

First, there are three main types of omega-3 fatty acids: DHA, EPA and ALA. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) are found in fish and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid ) is found in plants like flaxseed. When you choose an omega-3 source, we suggest that you select a healthy balance of all fatty acids, but make sure you are getting enough EPA and DHA, as these fatty acids are responsible for the majority of the health benefits of omega-3’s.

This is important to remember: if a food or supplement states it is high in omega-3, it does not necessarily mean it is high in EPA and DHA. For example, although flaxseed oil is six times richer than most fish oils in omega-3’s, flaxseed oil contains mainly ALA, not DHA and EPA. Unfortunately, our bodies can only convert ALA into DHA and EPA in very small amounts. Scientific studies have revealed that fatty acids from fish or fish oil, but not flaxseed oil, benefited patients with cardiovascular disease and ADHD.

The best sources of EPA and DHA are fatty fish and fish oil. Cold water fish (like salmon, herring and sardines) are high in omega-3 and serve as good sources of proteins. Unfortunately, our waterways and oceans are polluted and the fish that live in them are increasingly contaminated with methyl mercury, PCBs, arsenic, DDT and other heavy metals. If you choose to get omega-3’s from eating fish, then do your homework. Be sure that you’re buying from a sustainable, deep-water fishery. Check the Environmental Defense Fund’s web site for current ocean fish recommendations and the Environmental Protection Agency’s web site for information on fresh water fish.

Fish oil supplements are also very good sources of EPA and DHA. They are easy to take, pack a powerful punch of omega 3’s and they are highly effective. Although there are very good products available, the drawback is figuring out which fish oil supplement to choose for your family. Because the majority of fish in our oceans are contaminated, it stands to reason that oil from the fish are subject to the same contaminants. The good news is that high-quality fish oil is processed several times to concentrate and purify the oil so that it is safe and effective. So if you are looking for a fish oil supplement, ask if the oil is tested for quality, purity and concentration by an independent third party, such as the IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards). And don't hesitate to ask if the results of those tests are published for everyone to see.

Are there different types of EFA’s And What are the differences?

If you’re like most people, you are probably wondering, “What are essential fatty acids?” Or, “How could something with the word ‘fat’ in it be good for me?” The short answer is essential fatty acids (or EFA’s) are essential because our bodies alone cannot produce them – they must be obtained through our diet. EFA’s are long molecules that are used in the construction of the walls of our cells, known as the cell membranes. The cell membranes are critical for both nutritional processes and the excretion of toxic waste products. Without EFA’s, the body cannot make or repair cell membranes correctly. EFA’s also regulate bodily functions such as blood pressure, clotting, fertility, heart rate and immunity. For these reasons, they are often referred to as “good fats”.

Now that you know a little more about essential fatty acids, you may wonder, “Are there different types of EFA’s?” And if so, “What are the differences?”

There are two main classes of EFA’s in our diet – omega-3 and omega-6. The diet of our ancestors was very different from the diet we eat today. It was much lower in calories, higher in fiber, and richer in fruits, vegetables, lean meat and fish. It was also lower in overall total fat and contained equal amounts of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Today, however, the typical Western diet contains 10 to 25 times more omega-6 than omega-3, making the typical Western diet appallingly deficient in omega-3’s.

This is important because EFA’s are not all created equal: omega-3 and omega-6 have very different and opposing functions. Omega-3’s are necessary for proper cell membrane construction and keep the membrane flexible and supple. This is particularly important in red blood cells. In 2004, the FDA stated that consumption of omega-3’s may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, and they have been shown to reduce blood pressure and blood triglyceride levels. Omega-3’s have been studied for their beneficial role in brain and mood disorders, such as Parkinson’s and ADHA. Omega-6’s also have some benefits, such as supporting healthy skin and kidneys, but not nearly that of omega-3’s. Furthermore, too much omega-6 and not enough omega-3 has been shown to cause serious health problems, such as heart attack, arthritis, inflammation, mood disorders, obesity and cancer. Not only that, excessive omega-6 will compete with omega-3, thus increasing the deficiency of omega-3. Researchers now know that a proper balance of omega-6 and omega-3 EFA’s is critically important in development, decreasing chronic disease and improving mental function.

You can increase your omega-3 consumption by eating more cold water fish or taking a fish oil supplement. Omega-6 fatty acids can be found in walnuts, flaxseed and canola oil.
